Stephen D. Cutler, CFA
President, Managing Principal & Portfolio Manager
 
Steve is the President of Essex and has direct portfolio management responsibilities for private clients. As one of Essex’s three Managing Principals, he is responsible for the overall management of Essex. Prior to joining Essex in 1989, Steve was President and Director of Baring America (formerly Endowment Management & Research Corp.) for eighteen years. Prior to Baring, Steve was Director of Investments and Portfolio Manager for the Massachusetts Company and was a Portfolio Manager and Analyst for five years at Keystone. Steve is a member of the Boston Security Analysts Society and is a Chartered Financial Analyst. He serves as a Trustee of Babson College and is a member of the Investment Committee of the South Shore YMCA. Steve earned his A.B. degree from Brown University and received his M.B.A. from Babson College.
 
Christopher P. McConnell, CPA
Chief Executive Officer, Chief Compliance Officer & Managing Principal
 
As Chief Executive Officer, Chris is responsible for the overall management of the firm. Chris is also a member of the Firm’s Management Board. Chris joined Essex in 1993 as its Chief Financial Officer and Chief Compliance Officer. Before joining Essex in 1993, he was a Senior Tax Manager with Deloitte & Touche, LLP for ten years specializing in financial planning and investment management firms. He is a Certified Public Accountant registered in both Massachusetts and Texas. Chris is a former member of the Advisory Board of Northeastern University Graduate Tax Program and was an adjunct professor of the Graduate Tax Program. Chris is a founding board member of the Boston Hedge Fund Group. He is also a member of AICPA and the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants. He received his B.S. degree from Northeastern University and his M.S.T. from the University of Houston.
 
Joseph C. McNay
Chairman, Chief Investment Officer & Managing Principal
 
Joe is Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Essex. He has direct portfolio management responsibilities on a variety of funds and on behalf of private clients. He is a member of the firm’s Management Board. Prior to founding Essex in 1976, Joe was Executive Vice President and Director of Endowment Management & Research Corp. for nine years. Before 1967, Joe was Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager at the Massachusetts Company. Currently he is serving as Trustee of National Public Radio, Trustee of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and is a Trustee and member of the Children’s Hospital Investment Committee. He received his A.B. degree from Yale University and his M.B.A. degree from the Wharton School of Finance.
 
Nancy B. Prial, CFA
Managing Principal & Portfolio Manager
 
Nancy is a Portfolio Manager on the Essex Small/Micro Cap Growth and Small/Mid Cap Growth strategies. Prior to joining Essex in 2005, Nancy spent six years at The Burridge Group, LLC as Vice President and Chief Investment Officer and four years at the Twentieth Century division of American Century Investors. She began her investment career in 1984 at Frontier Capital Management as a fundamental analyst and portfolio manager. Nancy graduated from Bucknell University with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics. She earned her M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. Nancy serves as a Trustee for Bucknell University.

Tom has been a Research Analyst at Essex since 2004. Previously, he was a Vice President, Investment Manager at Baring Asset Management for two years, where he focused on technology companies. Prior to Baring, Tom held a variety of technology research positions over three years at Gerard Klauer Mattison, most recently as Vice President, Equity Research Analyst. In addition, Tom spent four years in the Investment banking Group of State Street Corporation. Tom received a B.A. from the University of Massachusetts and a M.B.A. from Boston University.
 
Luis R. Cortez, CFA

Luis has been a Research Analyst at Essex since 2004. Previously, he was a Senior Research Analyst at John Hancock Advisors for one year, where he worked on the John Hancock Biotechnology Fund and the John Hancock Health Sciences Fund. Prior to John Hancock, Luis held a variety of positions over ten years at Neuberger Berman Management, including Associate Portfolio Manager, Equity Analyst, Quantitative Analyst and Systems Analyst. Luis received a B.A. and a M.S. from Boston University.

Prior to joining Essex, Saralyn spent nine years at Burridge Growth Partners. Previously, Saralyn spent two years as an Associate Equity Analyst at Stifel, Nicolaus and Company, Inc. specializing in the analysis and evaluation of gaming companies. Saralyn earned a B.S. in statistics from the University of Michigan, a M.S. in Economics from the London School of Economics and a M.B.A. in Finance and Accounting from the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago.

Prior to joining Essex, Marcy spent three years at Burridge Growth Partners. Previously, Marcy spent two years as the Director of Corporate Development for the Levy Organization specializing in the identification and evaluation of potential acquisition/merger/expansion targets. Prior to that, Marcy spent five years as a Financial Analyst for the Zell/Chilmark Fund. Marcy earned a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania, and a M.M. degree from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University.

Alex has been a full-time Research Analyst at Essex since 2010. Previously, he held a part-time position at Essex as he completed his JD from Suffolk University Law School and his MBA from University of Massachusetts. During that same time he completed a Merger & Acquisitions internship at Banco Itau in Sau Paulo, Brazil and worked as a Legal Clerk at Sarrouf Corso LLC. He received his B.A from Ohio Wesleyan University.

Jessica has been a Research Analyst at Essex since 2008. Previously, she worked as a Senior Associate at Glocap Search. Prior to that, Jessica was an Associate at Wachovia Capital Partners for two years and an Analyst at Banc of America Securities for one year. She received a B.A./ B.S. from Georgetown University.

William H. Page
Vice President & Portfolio Manager
 
Bill is a Portfolio Manager on the Global Environmental Opportunities Strategy (GEOS). Bill directs environmental investment policy and research for Essex, and is on the Investment and Proxy Voting Committees. Prior to joining Essex in 2009, he spent eleven years at State Street Global Advisors (SSgA), most recently as Lead Portfolio Manager for GEOS and Head of the Environmental, Social and Governance(ESG) investment team. Bill developed GEOS over a four year period at SSgA, and was a member of the Global Fundamental Strategies group. Prior to SSgA, Bill worked in product management for Wellington Management Company, LLC. Before Wellington, he worked for Fidelity Investments in asset allocation. Bill has lectured extensively on environmental investing at global investment conferences and academic institutions. During business school, Bill worked on socially responsible investment research at KLD Research & Analytics. Bill is a founding board member of the Energy + Environment Foundation, focusing on strengthening energy and environmental education and promoting renewable energy. He earned a Bachelors degree in Economics from Boston University and an MBA from the F.W. Olin School of Business at Babson College.

Rob is a Portfolio Manager on the Global Environmental Opportunities Strategy. Prior to joining Essex in 2009, he was a Portfolio Manager at State Street Global Advisors where he managed several large cap equity portfolios. Previously, Rob was with John Hancock Advisers for over eight years, starting as a global industry analyst, and moving to portfolio management on the US large cap equities team. Prior to this, Rob worked in corporate finance for Ernst & Young in Boston and London, performing due diligence for public offerings, mergers and acquisitions. Rob earned a BA in Economics from Boston College and a MS in Accounting from Northeastern. He earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Martin P. Cournan

Prior to joining Essex in 1997, Martin was an equity trader with ASB Capital Management for two years, Head Equity Trader of Ewing Capital Incorporated for one and one half years, and Equity and Fixed Income Trader for Calvert Securities Corporation for three years. Martin is a Chartered Financial Analyst, Chartered Market Technician, a member of the Boston Traders Association and the Boston Society of Security Analysts. He is also a member of the Market Technicians Association and received his B.B.A. from George Washington University.
